Birthplace: Olivine City, Johto
Battle Style: Joshua, aiming to master the Water Type, favours an all-out offensive with Water Pokémon, similar to that of Misty of Cerulean City, whom he looks up to as a role model. He is much less of a fan of defensive manoeuvres, as he feels they disrupt his hyper-offensive momentum, though is open to using them should it be absolutely necessary. Anything to win, after all. He thrives on keeping pressure on the opponent, and exploiting environments to his advantage. For example, one of his trademark tactics with his Chinchou is to electrify a body of water that its in, thus allowing it to activate Volt Absorb, and damage opponents that are also in the water.
While Joshua obviously favours Water Types in battle, he is more than open to other Pokémon, most notably Psychic Types who have access to telekinetic abilities and can also manipulate their environment. This love of environment obviously puts Joshua at a slight disadvantage on standard battlefields, where he is forced to rely more on pure power and improvise his strategy around that, but his strategic prowess is otherwise a force to be reckoned with.
Looks: Standing at 5"11, and weighing in at 70 kilos, it's hard to describe Joshua's physicality as any more than "distinctly average". His build is slim, lacking in both muscle and fat, but not so skinny as to seem unhealthy. Likewise, his skin is fairly pale, but not to the extent that it seems sickly. This is mainly due to the fact that he rarely catches the sun anywhere but his face, neck and hands, as he much prefers to stay covered up. His face may be long, but cheerful Joshua is rarely without a warm smile and kind-hearted blue eyes. His dark brown hair is fairly short, but still shaggy, and any facial hair he grows is long and fine. No, he cannot grow a proper beard, hence why he shaves regularly. Stubble isn't a great look for him either.
As for his outfit, Joshua generally opts for a loose, long-sleeved, light blue shirt, and some tough, grey jeans, allowing him to stay cool and reasonably mobile, as well a comfortable pair of walking shoes for travelling. Depending on the weather, he tends to don either a tan leather jacket, or a long, dark green trenchcoat and purple scarf to stay warm in colder climates. Finally, his backpack is a navy blue with a yellow stripe across the middle, carried on his left shoulder.
Personality: While aware of his talents and abilities, especially when it comes to battling and acting on the stage, Joshua is far from the type to blow his own horn, being humble to the core, and valuing others above himself. Two things lie at the heart of this - a general kindheartedness and willingness to be good to people, and severe self-esteem and self-worth issues brought on by years of "teasing" and some considerable attention issues, which have contributed to his love of performance and grandeur.
His value of others above himself has led to a need to please people, which has left him prone to stress, though in recent years as he has matured, he has become more open to becoming self-centred, but not selfish, occasionally trying to put himself first for the good of his own health, but this is still something he's working on. Joshua is truly passionate about the things he loves, as well as the people he loves which leads to a certain perfectionist attitude. Despite all of this, Joshua is rarely without a smile on his face, making a clear effort to be cheerful for both himself and everyone around him, only allowing himself to break in the middle of the night.
Joshua is on his journey for three simple reasons:
1. Master the Water Type.
2. Search for evidence of Celebi, the time travelling Pokémon.
3. Experience the world before deciding what to do with his life.
He's a fairly average man in his early twenties, facing up to the ramifications of his childhood ending, and adulthood beginning. Faced with something of an existential crisis invoked by his parents, parents' friends and just people he knows around town asking him "So what are you doing with yourself?" "What are you doing with your life?" "Where do you see yourself in the future?" etc., Joshua has simply decided that he doesn't know, so taking some time to travel and think is the best option for him right now. But wandering aimlessly, walking the earth, while fun, is too unstructured for him without some kind of goal through it all to at least attempt to accomplish, hence why he's settled on exploring the Celebi Mythos, and perhaps attempting to discover any new evidence for the legendary time-traveller, and along the way, master his favourite kinds of Pokémon - the Water Type. He loves the fluidity, adaptability and coverage the type can provide. 70% of the Earth's surface is water, and the Water Type is so densely populated and diverse that there's something to be admired in almost every one of them. Mastering the type, for Joshua, means collecting many different types, battling other "masters" such as Misty and Crasher Wake and perhaps exploring Water Type moves through Contests and other such events.
History: In West Olivine City, born and raised, on the beach was where he spent most of his days. Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool and all, throwin' some Pokéballs outside of the school, when a silly Chinchou, who was up to no good, startin' makin' trouble in his neighbourhood. They got in one little fight and Chinchou got caught, he said "You're comin' with me on a journey 'cross the world."
Well, that's the abridged version. Joshua is from Olivine City in Johto, which greatly helped to culture his love of the Water Type. Port towns tend to have them as a rather prominent feature after all. Olivine, of course, also relies on Steel Types for its construction industry, lighthouse and Gym, but it was with the fishermen and sailors that Joshua spent most of his youth with, as many of his extended family fell into those categories. It was a fairly simple childhood, but one unfortunately scarred by "teasing" from others for petty, childish reasons. He never found it as funny as they did.
Things got better in his teenage years as he discovered the field of amateur dramatics, but Joshua still preferred to spend most of his time on the docks or beach, which led to him meeting a rowdy Chinchou who was causing some trouble for a couple of tourist bathers who had no idea how to handle ocean-dwelling Pokémon. Through some quick thinking, Joshua managed to distract the Chinchou and lure it out of the water, challenging it to pick on someone who didn't fear it. A fairly minor scuffle ensued, as a teenager started fighting an angler fish in a boxing match that was far less exciting than it sounds. But either way, they managed to win each other's respect. As such, Chinchou agreed to stay with Joshua, in a Pokéball he purchased later that day. They swore to each other that some day, they would see the world.
Most of his life has been rather uneventful. School was fine; Joshua excelled in arts subjects, and ranged from atrocious to above average in science. His acting developed over his teenage years as a hobby, but he never considered himself anything over than slightly above the norm. But now, the time has come to spread his wings and find what he wants out of life.
