Laelia Sinclair Empty Laelia Sinclair

Post by Marion Ette Wed Jun 12, 2013 9:49 pm

Name: Laelia Sinclair
Nickname: Some have suggested using the nickname “Lia”, though Laelia does not use the nickname herself.
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Rank: Pokemon Trainer
Birthplace: Mossdeep City, Hoenn

Battle Style: Laelia’s training in Mossdeep Gym has given her a particular affinity with psychic Pokemon, but more importantly, an implicit understanding of how they behave. On the battlefield, Laelia is a difficult individual to read, much like her expressionless Lunatone. Beneath that calm exterior, however, is a brilliant, yet chaotic mind. Rather than developing a trademark strategy of her own, Laelia tends to react to the strategies of others, relying heavily on her intuition and often acting on gut feelings and instincts as opposed to elaborate schemes. Those who admire Laelia’s strategies praise them as highly adaptive and unpredictable, while those who criticize them often refer to them as sloppy and/or impulsive. Laelia will use whatever moves her Pokemon have at their disposal in order to secure victory.

Looks: At 5’5”, Laelia is of relatively average height and weight for a female her age. She has Caucasian skin, dark brown eyes and short, choppy black hair. Her eyes are heavily made up to hide the dark circles that have settled underneath them from years of struggling with insomnia, and she is rarely seen without at least some form of makeup on. She takes great care in how she dresses, knowing full well the importance of first impressions. Her style of dress varies depending on the situation, though she tends to prefer clothes in darker colors which show off her figure. Her posture is dominant and assertive, and she carries herself with an air of confidence (and perhaps a bit of arrogance).

Personality: Despite Laelia’s empathic and intuitive abilities, or perhaps because of them, Laelia does not hold the human race in very high regard. Her mind has been permanently scarred by the darkness that she has perceived in others, and by the harsh truths revealed to her about the thoughts of those around her through Endy’s strong psychic perception. Sarcastic, seductive and highly manipulative, Laelia sees the truth as being subjective and often distorts it in her favor. She tends to lack sincere concern for her fellow man, and often only helps out another person when it is convenient or if it helps her own image. She will readily and passionately engage in intellectual discussions with others, though the positions and opinions she takes are highly variable, and she has been known to contradict herself and play devil’s advocate for appearances or for her own amusement. Constantly hiding behind metaphorical masks and half-truths, she sees people as nothing more than playthings and dehumanizes them for her own protection, never getting too close to anyone for fear that she might start hearing their thoughts… and the inevitable heartbreak that would result when their inner selfishness and hatred became apparent. Despite this attitude towards other people, however, Laelia loves her Pokemon with a fierce devotion, perceiving them as being more “real” than human beings and bestowing all of her trust to them. Only they can see the fragile, compassionate, sensitive girl beneath Laelia’s arrogant and aloof exterior, desperately looking for love and trying to claw her way out of her own impenetrable darkness.

History: Laelia is the second and last child of Mr. and Ms. Sinclair, who jointly ran the Pokemart in beautiful Dewford Town, where they had hoped to raise their future children. A rare genetic disorder claimed Laelia’s older brother when he was mere months old, and the tragedy devastated Laelia’s parents. When Laelia’s mother finally became pregnant again a year later, the doctors tested the growing embryo’s DNA… and found the same genetic abnormality. With heavy hearts, the doctors informed Laelia’s mother that this child, too, would likely die in her infancy. In deep denial and unable to reconcile with the truth, Laelia’s parents began a frenzied search for something – anything - to save their daughter. It was around this time that the couple became aware of a “psychic healing clinic” built in the town of Mossdeep City, where a group of trainers with powerful psychic Pokemon insisted, much to the skepticism of medical professionals, that their Pokemons’ unique powers could heal any illness. Though the couple would normally scoff at such a nonsensical idea, with their unborn child already destined to fall ill and pass away, they decided that anything was worth a shot.

The small, yet pristine clinic was manned by a warm and friendly receptionist that immediately put Laelia’s mother at ease. The waiting room was painted with pictures of serene psychic Pokemon, meditating hand in hand with equally tranquil human beings. As Laelia’s mother was guided to a comfortable chair in a private, well-lit room, a Reuniclus was called upon for Ms. Sinclair’s “healing journey”. The gentle creature laid his hands upon the expectant mother’s stomach, focusing his energies on healing the growing child within, as his trainer looked on with a calm, steady gaze, encouraging Laelia’s mother to remain still throughout the process. After what seemed like hours sitting with the highly focused Reuniclus, the creature finally pulled away and nodded his head, indicating that he had finished the job. Ms. Sinclair did not feel any different, but she thanked the Reuniclus and his trainer and went on her way. Unfortunately, harsh weather conditions delayed their journey back to Dewford, and during that delay, Laelia’s mother was rushed to the hospital so that she may give birth to the infant Laelia.
The first few months of Laelia’s life were torturous for her parents. Though she did not exhibit any of the symptoms her brother had before his untimely passing, she cried and screamed almost constantly, keeping her parents awake nearly all hours of the night, often clutching her head. Further genetic tests showed that Laelia’s DNA had somehow been altered, and the dangerous mutation was no longer present. The doctors reassured her parents that she was a healthy young baby, and that some babies simply had that kind of disposition. Even so, the screaming continued on, and once Laelia was old enough to communicate, she constantly complained of headaches. No matter how hard the doctors tried, however, they could not pinpoint the exact cause of these splitting headaches; finally, after consulting at least three different specialists, one cautiously suggested that it may be the beginnings of psychic ability. If this happened to be the case, training from other psychics may help Laelia relieve her symptoms.
Laelia’s frazzled parents found themselves permanently moving to Mossdeep City so that their young daughter could become an apprentice at the local psychic gym. As a surprise for Laelia, her parents also arranged for her to receive a psychic Pokemon of her own from one of the trainers there; not only would a psychic companion provide empathy and love for the ailing Laelia, but her parents also hoped that the creature would be able to anticipate her debilitating migraines and find some way to alleviate them. Laelia’s parents assumed that she would likely come home with an adorable Abra, or maybe a little Ralts or Spoink… They did not expect the red-eyed horror that came floating home beside their daughter later that evening. As little Laelia explained to the best of her ability, the Lunatone, who called himself Endymion, was the only one who could “speak” to her easily. Though Lunatone wasn’t exactly an ideal Pokemon for a three year old, their psychic connection was undeniable, and the pair grew up side by side. With Endy’s stoic guidance and the trainers helping her every step of the way, Laelia quickly became proficient at minor telekinetic tricks such as bending spoons and levitating small objects, and her migraines reduced dramatically. Even so, Laelia’s parents would find their daughter lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep for fear of the nightmares awaiting her…
As the years went on, Laelia became more and more withdrawn and distrustful of others. She could sense whenever her parents were frustrated with her for forcing them to move away from their lucrative business, and the resentment they felt towards her when money got tight, or their fear and loathing toward Endymion, who they felt understood their daughter better than they did. At the age of five, she could sense that her mother was pregnant once again… and accurately predicted her miscarriage. The prediction earned resentment and anger from her mother, and the thoughts in her mother’s head when the prediction came true absolutely terrified her. At the age of seven, she caught her father with strange feelings towards a woman who wasn’t her mother. Endy urged her not to tell anyone about what she was perceiving, but when she ignored this advice and asked her father about it anyway, her normally patient father became uncharacteristically angry and slapped her across the face. At the age of ten, she began to perceive that one of the other young apprentices in the gym was feeling jealousy and hatred towards her… and that another was feeling things toward her that made her feel incredibly uncomfortable. More and more, Laelia was beginning to perceive things about people she thought she trusted and loved that terrified her. Laelia desperately begged Endy to figure out a way to take her powers away, but the Lunatone would always remind her that without her power, people would easily take advantage of her.
Recently, Laelia hit her limit when she sensed that her long-time boyfriend, a man from a neighboring town whom she took ages to trust and had fallen hard for, had decided to leave her for another girl because Laelia was not as beautiful as her. Of course, he would never admit it, but Laelia could sense his thoughts better than anyone, and not only did his true reason hurt her profoundly, but the fact that he weakly tried to cover it up with lies about “compatibility” and “differing interests”. The fact that he would lie to her after so many years of being together shattered any trust she had left in humanity. Without telling anyone, she left the gym in Mossdeep City and set off on her own, unsure of what she was looking for, with only Endy by her side.

Pokémon

Pokémon: Lunatone
Nickname: Endymion (Endy)
Gender: Genderless (Prefers the pronoun “he/him/his”)
Level: 13
Moves: Tackle, Harden, Confusion, Rock Throw, Hypnosis, Rock Polish, Dream Eater (TM)
Ability: Levitate
Personality: Otherworldly and enigmatic, it is often difficult for even Laelia to fully comprehend what her own beloved Lunatone is thinking, despite Endy’s keen insight into the thoughts of others. He does communicate to his trainer telepathically, though his messages are often cryptic and disturbing. Endy’s wide-eyed stare is enough to unnerve even the most resolute of individuals.
